The last time Oregon State made the Rose Bowl was 1965. Thanks to a freshman running back, the Beavers control their own destiny in a chance to break the dry spell.
Jacquizz Rodgers (Class of 2007) carried the ball 27 times for his second straight 144-yard game in the Beavers’ 34-21 win over Cal. Thanks to their upset of Southern Cal earlier this season, the Beavers will win the Pac 10 and earn the Rose Bowl berth if they win their last two games.
Rodgers put Oregon State ahead to stay in the first quarter, breaking a 7-7 tie with a two-yard touchdown run.
Rodgers is leading the conference in rushing with 1,233 yards and 11 touchdowns on 255 carries.
Rodgers isn’t letting the success he has had as a rookie get to him.
“That was the way I was brought up to be, to get better everyday and keep the humble approach,” Rodgers told the Corvallis Gazette Times. “I can keep it that way. You just have to stay focused.”
• Tim Tebow (Class of 2004) threw for 173 yards and accounted for three touchdowns to lead Florida to a 56-6 win over South Carolina.
• Northwestern cornerback Jordan Maybin (Class of 2006) intercepted a Michigan pass in the end zone while the Wildcats were holding on to a seven-point lead, to help preserve a 21-14 Northwestern win.
• Arizona running back Keola Antolin (Class of 2007) ran for 87 yards and four touchdowns – three in the fourth quarter, as Arizona fell 55-45 at Oregon.
• Mississippi quarterback Jevan Snead (Class of 2005) accounted for five touchdowns in a 59-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe.
• Missouri’s Derrick Washington (Class of 2006) ran for 128 yards on only 11 carries and a pair of touchdowns in 52-20 win over Iowa State.
• Cincinnati’s Tony Pike (Class of 2003) threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns before leaving injured in a 28-20 win over Louisville that kept the Bearcats in the running for the Big East title.
• Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards (Class of 2005) hit 12 of 14 passes for 147 yards and three touchdowns, while running for 104 yards in a 24-16 win over Elon to win their fourth straight conference title.

Jacquizz Rodgers has been in the Pac 10 for nine games, but he has already learned to love playing against teams from Los Angeles.
Rodgers (Class of 2007), a freshman running back for Oregon State, ran roughshod over UCLA in the Beavers’ 34-6 rout at the Rose Bowl.
Rodgers carried the ball 31 times for 144 yards and a touchdown, also catching a touchdown pass from Sean Canfield in the fourth quarter to help open up a game that was tied 3-3 at halftime.
The 31 carries was the second-most carries Rodgers had in a game this season and the 144 yards the third-most. The career highs in carries and yards came in the Beavers’ upset on then-No. 1 USC.
"We just weren't executing in the beginning. But the defense played lights out,” Rodgers said. “To not give up a touchdown, that was big. We knew we were beating ourselves in the beginning. In the second half, we put it on ourselves to come out and play hard.”
Rodgers became the most prolific freshman running back in conference history with 1,089 yards. He’s the third conference running back to cross the 1,000-yard threshold as a freshman; Oregon State’s Ken Simonton (1,028 in 1998) and Stanford’s Darrin Nelson (1,069 in 1977) were the others.
• Houston running back Bryce Beall (Class of 2007) carved up Tulane for 176 yards rushing and three total touchdowns in a 42-14 win.
• Southern Cal safety Taylor Mays (Class of 2005) had five tackles and broke up four passes in the Trojans’ 17-3 win over Cal.
• Jordan Shipley (Class of 2003) had 81 yards receiving in Texas’ win over Baylor, but his touchdown catch in the third quarter meant the senior has scored a touchdown in all 10 games so far this season. He has a receiving touchdown in all but one game -- last week versus Texas Tech, when he had a punt return for a touchdown.
• Still healing from a broken left (non-throwing) arm, Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike (Class of 2003) threw a 3-yard touchdown pass in overtime to lead the Bearcats to a 26-23 upset at then-No. 25 West Virginia.
• Wingate defensive back Dietrich Wright (Class of 2003) had a game-high 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks and broke up a pass in a 45-42 loss to Mars Hill.
• Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards ran for 152 yards on nine carries and had 176 yards passing in a 49-7 win over Chattanooga.
• Florida State running back Antone Smith (Class of 2004) helped break open a close game with two fourth-quarter touchdown runs to lead the Seminoles to a 41-24 win at Clemson.

Last year, Armanti Edwards led Appalachian State on the road to Wofford, and saw his Mountaineers stunned just a few weeks after beating Michigan.
This year, Wofford had to come to ASU, and Edwards got his revenge.
In a game pitting the No. 2 Mountaineers and No. 3 Wofford, Edwards (Class of 2005) did whatever he wanted in a 70-21 win on Halloween night in a nationally televised game.
“Nobody gave us a chance to win this game so we really took that to heart,” Edwards said. “Of course we had a chip on our shoulders, they beat us last year and a lot of people were expecting the same thing again so we felt like we had to come out and make a statement.”
Edwards completed 17 of 19 passes for 367 yards and a school-record tying five touchdowns. He ran for another 73 yards.
In the process, the junior set the Southern Conference record for all-purpose yards at 9,397, hitting the mark in only 33 starts.
Edwards’ play left his coach, Jerry Moore, speechless.
“Armanti, I’ve about said all there is to say about him,” Moore said. “He’s an incredible player and a leader.”
• Wisconsin running back John Clay (Class of 2005) ran for 111 yards on 14 carries and had a 32-yard touchdown run in Wisconsin's 25-24 loss to Michigan State.
• Mississippi quarterback Jevan Snead threw a pair of short touchdown passes to give the Rebels a 17-7 win over Auburn, and close in on becoming bowl eligible.
• Miami quarterback Jacory Harris (Class of 2007) threw a 26-yard touchdown pass with 55 seconds left in regulation to tie the game against Virginia, and threw a 9-yard TD pass in overtime to give the Hurricanes a 24-17 road win.
• West Virginia cornerback Brandon Hogan had two interceptions and a fumble recovery as the Mountaineers upset Connecticut 35-13.

Andy Dalton might not be the most heralded quarterback in Texas. But with more games like Saturday, more people will learn about Texas Christian University’s quarterback.
In his second game off a knee injury that sidelined him for a couple games, Dalton (Class of 2005) carved up Wyoming in the Horned Frogs’ 54-7 win.
In a game that could have been a letdown after knocking off a top-10 BYU team, Dalton hit on 16 of 22 passes for 334 yards and four touchdowns.
Dalton hit Jimmy Young on three long touchdown passes. The pair connected on a 60-yard touchdown in the first quarter on the opening drive of the game. Early in the second quarter, it was a 55-yard strike that to double the TCU lead.
After running in a 1-yard score in the third quarter, Dalton found Moore on 39-yard pass. Dalton threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Justin Watts in the fourth quarter.
"Jimmy played great," Dalton said. "He kept getting open and I kept throwing him the ball."

Jacory Harris came into Saturday's game for Miami with the Hurricanes trailing Duke 14-7 and struggling to get much going on offense.
Trailing twice by 10 points to the Blue Devils, the freshman quarterback (Class of 2007) took over.
Harris threw for four touchdowns and ran for another score in the last two-plus quarters to spark a 49-31 Miami win.
Trailing 17-7 with 1:33 left in the second quarter, Harris led the Hurricanes down the field and capped off the drive with a 9-yard scoring strike with 11 seconds remaining in the half.
Again down – this time 24-14 – Harris led Miami for three touchdowns in a 12-minute span of the third quarter to take a 35-24 lead entering the final quarter.
Harris finished 18-for-28 with 185 yards passing and ran for 53 yards. He was the first Miami quarterback to throw for four touchdowns and account for five scores in one game since 2003.
• Coming in for a fumble-prone starter early in the game against California, Arizona freshman running back Keola Antolin (Class of 2007) went for 149 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 42-27 upset win.

Jordan Shipley had one of the most storied high school careers in Texas football history. Shipley, still that state’s all-time leading receiver, left Burnet High with 264 catches and 5,424 yards, the latter being the second-best total career total in the nation.
On Saturday, Oct. 11, however, Shipley (Class of 2003) had a day to remember. He caught 11 passes, a career high, for 112 yards and a touchdown as the Texas Longhorns upset No. 1 Oklahoma, 45-35. Along the way, he returned a kickoff 96 yards and helped set up the game-winning touchdown with a key reception.
For Shipley, the game was special for other reasons. He arrived at Texas as a highly regarded recruit but missed most of his first two seasons due to injuries. But on Saturday, he helped Texas leapfrog four teams in moving from No. 5 to No. 1 in the national rankings.

Missouri hadn’t won in Lincoln, Neb., against the Cornhuskers for 30 years – long before any members of the Tigers football team had been born. Derrick Washington made sure that streak didn’t stretch into a fourth decade.

"This guy is an impact player running the football,” Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said after the game, according to Nebraska football’s Web site. “He’s explosive, he’s very hard to tackle, he’s 220 pounds, he’s got great vision. I don’t know what to compare his style to, it’s his style, it’s what he does.”

Two years ago, Jacquizz Rodgers was a junior in high school when Oregon State knocked off a top-ranked Southern Cal team.
Thursday night, Rodgers was the star of the show as Oregon State repeated the feat.

Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike (Class of 2003) has waited four years to get a start for the Bearcats.
Saturday, in the nation’s oldest non-conference rivalry, Pike got his shot.
Pike, who had 38 career pass attempts entering the game, was near perfect in a 45-20 win over Miami, (Ohio). Pike completed 20 of 24 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for another 33 yards.

“I was able to sit back there and be able to make throws,” Pike said after the game. “Our line did a great ob, and our backs were getting five yards a carry. I was reading reads and letting the receivers do it."
Coach Brian Kelly said that Pike was well prepared going into the game.“He did the things he does in practice,” Kelly said. “I think he played a very good football game. He is a very experienced football player.”

After South Florida spotted the No. 13 Jayhawks a 20-3 lead in the second quarter, Grothe led the No. 19-ranked Bulls back with a 37-34 win.
Grothe got the Bulls going with a 28-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 20-10 just before halftime. Grothe hit Taurus Johnson with a 21-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 20 in the third quarter.
Grothe’s second touchdown pass of the game covered 37 yards to A.J. Love to give the Bulls a 34-20 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Jayhawks would tie the game at 34-34, but a field goal as time ran out gave South Florida the win.

Jahvid Best wasted no time to make his mark in his first career start for California.
Best (Class of 2006) took a handoff 80 yards on the first play from scrimmage at Washington St., giving Cal the only points it would need in a 66-3 rout.
Best, a sophomore, ran for 200 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns, averaging 14.3 yards per carry.
The opening-play touchdown wasn't even Best's longest run from scrimmage: he scored on an 86-yard run on the Bears' second offensive play in the second half. It was Best's final carry of the game as the Bears had jumped out to a 49-3 lead at that point.
That touchdown, as well as a 5-yard scoring run late in the second quarter, came after interceptions by Cal's defense.

Another former Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year has gone on to achieve great things.
As a sophomore at Florida this season, Tim Tebow (a 2004 honoree) was entrusted to lead the offense for the defending national champion Florida Gators, and he did to the tune of 29 touchdown passes, 22 touchdown runs, and a 9-3 record.
But he will now have something preceding his name that no sophomore ever has: Heisman Trophy Winner.
Tebow (Class of 2004), edged SEC foe Darren McFadden of Arkansas in winning the Heisman Trophy Dec. 8.
“I want to accept this award on behalf of my coaches, teammates and the entire Gator Nation,” Tebow said after winning the award. “This award is more about them than it is for me. I am very proud to represent the University of Florida.”
Tebow becomes the third Florida quarterback to win the Heisman, following Steve Spurrier (1966) and Danny Wuerffel (1996). Florida is also the second school to have three quarterbacks win the Heisman Trophy, joining Notre Dame. Tebow's tied the NCAA record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, and has 30 in 26 games, trailing Emmitt Smith by six touchdowns for the school record for rushing TDs. Tebow led the conference in scoring, total offense and passing efficiency, and his 51 touchdowns were more than 87 teams in the Bowl Subdivision.

A week after being part of one of the most staggering offensive shows in college football history, Weber State's Trevyn Smith put on a pretty good solo show.
Smith (Class of 2004) ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns, and picked up 120 yards receiving and two more touchdowns in the Wildcats' 52-37 win at Idaho State.
Trailing 10-0 after the first quarter, Smith single-handedly hauled Weber State into a lead they would never relinquish. For several years, Northwestern's wide-open offense has wreaked havoc on opposing defenses. But until Saturday, none of the quarterbacks who choreographed the prolific offense had a day like C.J. Bacher. Bacher (class of 2003) completed 38 of 48 passes for five touchdowns and a school-record 520 yards in a 48-41 overtime win at Michigan State. "C.J. is a gamer," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said after the game. “He's been progressively improving, I think our offensive line gave tremendous protection today, we spread the ball well, we got the ball to our weapons, and we had a lot of guys make big plays.
“I just said it a week ago, C.J. is just starting to embark on his first full year of being a starting quarterback. I just see him making more and more strides and I'm excited about his future."
Bacher threw his first touchdown pass of the game with 13 seconds left in the first half, a 9-yard strike to Ross Lane.
After MSU tied it early in the third quarter, Bacher connected with Jeff Yarbrough on a 78-yard touchdown. The teams would alternate touchdowns the rest of the half, with Bacher throwing a 1-yard scoring pass to Lane and a 70-yard pass to Eric Peterman

For the second year in a row, South Florida went on the road against a big-name, ranked opponent.
And for the second year in a row, Matt Grothe led the Bulls to a stunning upset win.
Grothe (Class of 2004) threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jessie Hester on the Bulls' first possession of overtime to stun No. 17 Auburn 26-23.
Grothe threw for 184 yards while completing 66 percent of his passes. He ran for 31 yards and got South Florida on the board first with a 1-yard touchdown plunge.
With his team trailing 20-17 with less than 3 minutes left in the game, Grothe drove the Bulls to the 1 yard line, settling for a field goal with 55 seconds left in the game. After the Bulls' defense held Auburn to a field goal, South Florida got their shot to win.
But it was far from easy. Facing a fourth-and-1 from Auburn's 16, the Bulls went for the first down instead of the tying field goal and Grothe surged ahead for the yard they needed. Two plays later, Grothe and Hester ended it.

Armanti Edwards (Class of 2005) took command of Appalachian State as a freshman quarterback and led the Mountaineers to their second straight I-AA national title.
As a reward the Mountaineers were supposed to be fodder for the University of Michigan in the season opener. Instead, Edwards helped pull off one of the greatest upsets in college football history.
Edwards accounted for four touchdowns, three through the air, as ASU went to Michigan and stunned the Wolverines 34-32.
Edwards threw for 227 yards on 17 of 23 passing. His touchdown passes covered 68, 9 and 20 yards.
ASU let a 31-20 third quarter lead slip away and trailed 32-31 when Michigan lined up for a field goal that would have iced the game, but the Mountaineers blocked the kick.
That's when Edwards took the game over when his team needed it most. With no time outs remaining and the ball on his own 26 with 1:37 left, Edwards sprinted for 18 of his 62 yards rushing. After an unsuccessful running play, Edwards completed his next four passes to bring ASU to the Michigan 5. The Mountaineers kicked a field goal for a 34-32 lead.
The Wolverines quickly drove to the ASU 20 on one long pass play, but with 6 seconds left, the Mountaineers’ special teams came through again with 6 seconds left, when Corey Lynch blocked the second Michigan field goal attempt in the last 100 seconds to seal the win.
• Marlon Lucky (Class of 2005) ran all over Nevada in Nebraska's 52-10 season-opening win. Lucky pounded out a career best 233 yards rushing on 30 carries and had 266 all-purpose yards while scoring four touchdowns.
